Tove Jansson wrote the story during World War II as a tale to comfort herself during dark times, reflecting the reality for millions of people who were on the run and seeking shelter. The story follows Moominmamma and Moomintroll who are searching for a new home and the missing Moominpappa. Eventually, they find themselves in what will become known as Moominvalley.
