His father was a Guji legend: a producer and a coffee trader who built the very first washing station in the Bule Hora community in Guji, in the early 00’s. In the meantime, unfortunately, he went bankrupt losing all of his growing lands. Tagel promised himself to redeem the plots that had belonged to his father and years later he pulled it off! Then, in 2018, when the government made it easier for producers to export by liberalizing legislation, he founded Olkai.Hambela Goro works with 460 smallholder producers that grow 74110 varietal at an impressive altitude of 2300 masl. Most of them own literally only hundreds of coffee trees each, which makes lots from Hambela Goro truly multi-component blends. At the same time, the consistency and quality of this coffee are beyond extraordinary.In addition to direct involvement in coffee production, Olkai prioritizes social responsibility in order to empower producers they work with. Under Tagel’s leadership the company provides above-market rates for growers, distributes seedlings annually and supports the construction of schools and needed infrastructure within communities.ABOUT COFFEEThe cherries are collected at a really peak ripeness. Then they undergo several steps of hand sorting. After depulping the coffee is submerged in water, in tanks and goes through 48 hours of fermentation. Following this, the parchment is being moved to african beds for drying and that takes around 10-12 days, depending on the weather and humidity prevailing during this period.Several amazing factors, such as specific terroir, extremely high altitude, an amazing 74110 varietal, smallholders’ skills and the professional management and organization at Hambela Goto created a beautiful synergy, resulting in this wonderful washed coffee. Expect complex layers of florals and crisp citrus, backed by a deep, stone fruit-like sweetness. Simply a quintessence!ROASTER'S NOTEPeach iced tea captured in a coffee. Jesús Arbey Iquira is a dedicated coffee producer who employs meticulous farming practices to ensure the highest quality beans. His commitment to excellence is evident in the careful selection of coffee varieties and processing methods used on the farm. He has developed meticulous processing methods over the years that can give his coffees very unique profiles.ABOUT COFFEEIn general, the ripest cherries are selected for natural processing, they are often hand sorted or float-sorted, cleaned, and placed on raised beds in a covered area to dry for at least a two-week period. The high humidity and rainy climates across Colombia do add to the challenging of achieving a high-quality naturally-processed coffee; but, when it is done properly and the coffee is moved consistently throughout the curing process, we find the resulting cup profile to be exquisite. Pink Bourbon: Cultivated from hybridization of Red and Yellow Bourbon. It's very rare, but the producers say it is quite resistant to rust. Pink and Orange Bourbons are very difficult to produce with consistency. The recessive genes leading to the expression of these colors are easily thwarted by the presence of yellow and red genes in a given pollen grain. A carefully isolated and contained lot can do quite well and preserve the unique color and character of this variety, though this is quite hard to find.ROASTER'S NOTEElegant yet very expressive. The farm covers 6 hectares, 5 of which are dedicated to coffee cultivation, and the trees in this lot are around four years old.The farm is managed by Vladimir and his family, and the entire process, from harvesting to drying, takes place on-site and under their direct supervision. The harvest season runs from April to December and is based on selective hand-picking to maintain consistent quality and uniformity of the cherries.ABOUT THE COFFEEGesha is a variety strongly associated with exceptional quality and a very high sensory potential when grown at high altitudes. It is also a low-yield variety, which means that even with high demand, it remains genuinely limited on the market. For years it has consistently won the most prestigious coffee competitions and achieved record-breaking results at international auctions.This lot is processed using a washed method with extended, controlled fermentation. The harvest is done manually and selectively, in cycles roughly every 20 days, using only fully ripe cherries.After harvesting, the cherries ferment in bags for about 12 hours. They are then transferred to a hopper, where the initial oxidation stage is completed. The coffee then undergoes flotation, followed by depulping and an extended fermentation of approximately 200 hours in tanks or vats.After fermentation, the coffee is washed using either a portable washing unit or an Ecomill system. It is then dried on raised beds for 15–17 days and stabilized in GrainPro bags for 10–15 days. In addition to coffee, farmers near their plantations also grow macadamia nuts, bananas, and maize. Karindundu supports farmers by advising them on practices such as using organic fertilizers and pruning their plants. The station also operates a demonstration plot where these methods can be observed in practice.Fun fact: After harvesting ripe coffee cherries, farmers deliver them to Karindundu, where they undergo a traditional washed process. The coffee is depulped, fermented overnight, washed, and then placed on raised drying beds, where it dries until it reaches the desired moisture level.

Due to the generally small size of farms in Sumatra, most coffee is a blend of beans from many smallholders.
