Ya Bao is primarily composed of dormant buds, which are picked at the very beginning of the calendar year after the Yunnan winter. These buds are firmly built and full of a crisp, resinous-piney aroma; in the future these buds would develop not into leaves, but into young branches. Their appearance is a real preview of spring.
It’s actually hard to talk about this tea like it’s a typical brew. Its history and appearance are completely different to all other teas; the same can be said for its taste. It’s endlessly pleasant, the sweet flavour is associated with the aroma of resin, hops, pine, with the delicate fruitiness of apricots or peaches biting through. The brew never becomes bitter, even after sitting in boiling water for several minutes. Buds soaked overnight in cold water produce an exquisite cold brew.
